Privacy policy

Speaking up should never put you at risk. This is how we collect, use and protect personal information.

Last updated 29 September 2026

1. Who we are

Men for Change is a non-profit organisation based in South Africa. We run this platform so that men can report the problems they face and so that those experiences become visible. We are the responsible party for the personal information described here under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA). You can contact our Information Officer at hello@menforchange.org.

2. What we collect

We collect as little as possible, and most of it is optional.

  • Reports: the category, title, description, date, whether you reported it to the authorities, an optional age range, and the town, province and country. When you pick a point on the map, our server rounds it to about 1 km before saving it. We never store your exact location.
  • Support requests: if you ask us to contact you, the email address you give us.
  • Accounts (optional): your email address, a display name and your password, which is stored only as a secure one-way hash.
  • Donations: the amount and frequency, plus your name, email and message if you choose to give them. Card payments are made on the secure checkout page of our payment provider, Yoco: we never receive your full card number or banking details. Yoco tells us whether a payment succeeded, its amount and whether it was made by card or instant EFT.
  • Messages: what you send through the contact form or when you raise a concern about a story.
  • Technical information: your IP address, used briefly to prevent abuse (for example, rate limiting) and in short-lived security logs.

We use one essential cookie to keep you signed in. It can't be read by page scripts. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.

3. How we use it

  • To publish moderated reports and to show anonymised statistics and the hotspot map (with your consent).
  • To contact you if you asked for support (with your consent).
  • To run your account, if you create one.
  • To match donations to bank payments and to thank donors.
  • To reply to messages and review concerns about stories.
  • To keep the platform safe, prevent abuse and meet our legal obligations.

4. What is public

Only reports approved by our moderators are published. Published reports never show your email, account, exact location or reference code. Your display name appears only if you chose to show it. Moderators may edit a report to remove details that could identify you or anyone else.

5. Who we share it with

We do not sell personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run the platform (such as hosting, email and Yoco for card payments), under confidentiality obligations, or where the law requires us to. When you pay by card, you give your card details directly to Yoco, and Yoco's own privacy terms apply to them.

The map uses OpenStreetMap services: map images load from OpenStreetMap servers, and when you search for a place or pick a point on the report form, that search or point is sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to find the place name. We may share anonymised, aggregated statistics with researchers, the media and policymakers.

6. How long we keep it

  • Reports: while they serve our mission, or until you delete them from your dashboard.
  • Accounts: until you delete your account in Account settings.
  • Sign-in sessions expire after 30 days. Password reset links expire after one hour.
  • Donation records: as long as we need them for our financial records.

7. Your rights

Under POPIA you may ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you, and you may object to how we use it.

Signed-in members can delete reports and their whole account themselves. For anything else, email hello@menforchange.org. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa).

8. How we protect it

Passwords are hashed, sign-in tokens are short-lived, and contact details are visible only to the moderators who need them. No system is perfectly secure, so please don't include information in a report that you would not want published.

9. Children

If you are under 18, please talk to a parent, guardian or another adult you trust before sharing a report, or call Childline on 116 (free, 24/7). We handle reports from under-18s with extra care.

10. Changes to this policy

We'll update this page if our practices change and show the date of the latest version above. See also our Terms of use.
